FORTH is used not only in telescopes but mostly in robotics. It is used as an assembler for some sorts of chips. FORTH is great when you need a cheap (in terms of resources first of all) and fully functional machine with simple interface.
In fact, stack machines (FORTH-like and not) are widely used in science.
